Uneasy Sentiments Series

I view these works as a zany celebration of “offness”. Unwieldy yet strained. Fraught with a sort ofcartoon passion. While painting them, I feel the wide-eyed painstaking devotion of the amateur that loves but fails. I paint the anguish of a cut rose with a big nose as it shouts “oh no!”. A flower whose fleshy green stem is to thick for its delicate vase. An angry slappy hand face with menacing shiny red nails. People wearing sunglasses and face paint being alone in their living room. A postmodern sculpture accosting a man in a museum. Musicians with pony tails wearing light blue jeans and levitating. A woman floating in a lake with a bottle of beer and a mallard duck. A teary Eye Man staring at the sunset, sitting on a rock, hiding himself behind some trees and trekking across a desert. There’s longing. There’s an affected sensibility. It’s camp a-la Susan Sontag. It’s pastiche, eclectic and kitsch. It’s about really about a particularsort of feeling. It’s anti-serious but intense. It’s unnatural and out of place and pretending. It’s inside and outside, exposed and vulnerable. It’s enjoyment and social (or existence) anxiety. It’s a collection of Uneasy Sentiments.
